Nursing parents who have access to paid leave are more likely to breastfeed, which has been shown to improve the heart health of the parent and baby. Also, paid leave is important for heart attack survivors in recovery. Almost half of all heart attack survivors return to work after 4 weeks but recovery might take up to 6 months.

Our rural economies and micropolitan communities depend on locally owned small and medium-scale businesses. Universal paid leave is our opportunity to create an affordable and equitable benefit, uplifting the health of Vermont’s workforce and business ecosystem one household at a time.

Time and again, the same people are pushed to the margins for the sake of political expediency: people of color, people with disabilities, and people paid poverty wages. Children bear the brunt of this inequitable system and suffer the consequences for a lifetime. We support a universal, accountable, and affordable paid leave program to uplift working parents and ensure child well-being.
Survivors deserve time to seek safety and heal without losing a paycheck. Safe leave will improve survivors’ access to important services, like safety planning, medical care, and the criminal legal system.
Food security is directly related to economic security. When an injury limits someone’s ability to work or a family member needs care, people across Vermont need paid leave to ensure they can continue to afford basic needs like food, shelter, and time to ensure their own well-being before returning to work.
